Somali Civic Leadership Programme Become a Civic Leader
Operation Black Vote funded by the European Commission are looking for 50 dynamic and enthusiastic men and women from the Somali community who live or work in Tower Hamlets to participate in the Tower Hamlets Somali Civic Leadership Programme.
The programme builds on the success of Operation Black Vote’s groundbreaking Civic Empowerment Programmes and is designed to address the deficit of Somali individuals at all levels of public and civic life.
The free programme will look at:
Politics
The Criminal Justice System
Education
Voluntary and Community Work
It will allow the participants to gain experience through shadowing sessions and training days and to find out more about these important areas of public and civic life.
Successes from previous schemes include:
A number of participants standing to be local councillors, including the first Somali Councillor in Wales
Participants becoming school governors
One participant becoming the chair of her local Safer Neighbourhood Team
Aims and Objectives:
By participating in this programme you will have the opportunity to develop a wide range of transferable skills in several areas of public and civic life. We aim not only to increase Somali representation in Tower Hamlets and give individuals the skills to pursue a variety of public and civic roles, but also to give people the knowledge and confidence to speak to others about civic engagement in the future.
How will the programme run?
The programme will be based in Tower Hamlets and will comprise around 10-12 non-consecutive days from April 2014 – December 2014. Candidates may choose between 2-4 areas of public life including School Governors, Safer Neighbourhood Panels, Councillors and Trustees, with a focus on gaining the skills and knowledge to engage in public life.
